IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN THIS PARTISAN…

IN 1956, the US House voted 388 to 19 in favor of the Federal Aid Highway Act, creating 41,000 miles of national highway through the largest federal infrastructure investment to date.

In 1964, the US Senate overrode the longest filibuster in history on the Civil Rights Act, when 44 Democrats voted with 27 Republicans.

In 1972, 96 Republican House members joined 151 Democrats to pass the Clean Water Act, 247-23 over a Nixon Administration veto.

In 1990, the final US House vote on the Americans with Disabilities Act was 377-28. In 2007, 34 Republican and 39 Democratic Senators voted to pass the Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act.

But recent legislative efforts on chronic issues have stalled due to rigid partisanship and unwillingness to compromise in both houses of the US Congress as well as many state legislatures. And all Americans suffer as a result.
